Discolored nails? Yellowish hue ? Thickened nails? sometimes painful? these are the common symptoms associated with Onychomycosis often referred to “Waa Kakao” in the local Ga dialect. what causes it ?

Usually caused by fungi (like dermatophytes), but yeasts and molds can also be to blame. These germs thrive in warm, moist environments—think changing rooms, sweaty shoes, and public showers.

Common Risk Factors:

  • Walking barefoot in damp public places

  • Wearing tight or sweaty shoes

  • Nail injuries

  • Having athlete’s foot

  • Weakened immune system

  • Diabetes or poor circulation

To prevent onychomycosis wear gloves when  you have to  immerse your hands  in water for long hours.  especially if you have had an infection before. Here are some preventive tips.

  • Keep nails trimmed and clean

  • Change socks daily—especially if you sweat a lot.
  • Don’t share nail clippers or shoes.

  • Avoid tight shoes and use antifungal powder if needed.

  • Let your feet breathe—go barefoot at home occasionally.
